I dont think he knew about his friends being fake towards him. I think he was well aware of people using him for the parties but he didnt know that his "close" friends were doing the same. I believe he died not figuring this out. Because it is only truly revealed when nobody shows up to his funeral.
I think he knew from the start that people just used him for his extravagant parties, and connections, but he didn't care about them because he was too preoccupied with pleasing Daisy. I don't think he quite realized that Daisy was also one of those people who used him, until the very end when she stays with Tom.
Gatsby knew that the people who visited his parties were very superficial. However, he knew that Nick was different from his other "friends," which is why he enjoyed spending time with Nick.
It was no surprise that very few people would go to Gatsby's funeral. As people before me said, Gatsby only threw his parties to get close to Daisy. Everyone else was just invited for the sake of being invited. So that Gatsby had a reason to try and get Daisy or people close to Daisy around him.
Why did so few people show up to Gatsby's funeral? Does any one think that because Gatsby was so ambitious to reach his goal that he made very few personal connections?
Does anyone think that Gatsby knew before he died that his friends were being fake and just liked him for his money? If that makes sense
